Above you see a man admiring the Willingdon Airfield, now known as Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. Once the main airport for the Delhi city until the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Palam was commissioned for passengers. It is still used for VIP aviation, general aviation purposes and small propeller planes. But since December 2009 this airport is under going a change – it is being converted into a parking lot with a capacity for 3000+ cars to be used during the Common Wealth Games. People who would like to drive down to Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium for the Grand Opening of the games can flash their ticket and park the cars airport. Yes, your entry ticket is a parking ticket as well. Estimated expense is of Rs. 50 Crores for this temporary parking. The pre-cast concrete pavers used for building this parking are supposed to be reused at the DTC Bus Depots.
Another news says, their is a 3 KM tunnel is also planned to the airport from Prime Minister’s house, who usually uses this airport for his helicopter rides and will also use the same tunnel in emergency situations. This sure will cut alot on the traffic halts we suffer due to VIP movements, coz PM’s gotta catch a plane and our time is not important for the nation!
Both the above initiatives are gonna help the citizens a lot, but am just curious after so many Common Wealth Games related corruption and over priced purchase news in the newspapers everyday, how much peoples money would have been wasted in this? Any ideas?
